Unisys Client Georgia Aquarium Awarded 2008 Computerworld Honors Program Laureate MedalPrestigious award recognizes world’s largest aquarium for creative use of IT to enhance operations and guest services
BLUE BELL, Pa., June 24, 2008 – IDG’s Computerworld Honors Program recently named Georgia Aquarium as a member of the Computerworld Honors Program Laureates Class of 2008, as well as a finalist for the leadership award in the Media, Arts and Entertainment category of the program. Unisys (NYSE: UIS) nominated Georgia Aquarium for this honor.
The award recognized Georgia Aquarium’s use of an IT infrastructure, based on Unisys ES7000 Enterprise Servers, which meets the organization’s operational needs in real time and enables consistently high levels of service to visitors. The cutting-edge IT environment has allowed the Georgia Aquarium, in its first 12 months of operation, to host 3.6 million guests – 50 percent more than originally anticipated – pay all employees on schedule, run a fully operational email system and keep track of feeding and care schedules for all the aquarium’s animals.
"We congratulate Georgia Aquarium on this well deserved recognition,” said Mary Ellen Fortier, vice president, Marketing, Unisys Systems and Technology. “We are pleased that Unisys could contribute to the success of the aquarium’s innovative programs by providing IT infrastructure that streamlines operations and enables more creative services for visitors from around the world.”
The “whale of an infrastructure,” as the nomination profile calls it, supports standard databases; an application that handles online annual- and day-pass sales; email for employees; payroll applications; software programs that track feedings for the 100,000-plus animals housed in the aquarium and help with real-time crowd control for up to 3,800 visitors at a time; and monitoring of water filtration systems that enable the aquarium to manage eight million gallons of salt water.
