Travel Reduction
- Expanded use of Internet-based training and video conferencing reduces employee travel; consequently, reducing vehicle generated air pollution.
- Many employees are offered the opportunity to establish at home offices adding flexibility to commute schedules or reducing the need for daily work-related travel altogether.
- Unisys actively promotes, encourages and supports home-based offices for its employees. The transportation demand reduction resulted in the elimination of nearly 12,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2008.
Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) Management
Unisys maintains an inventory of equipment that utilize ODS chemicals and tracks ODS usage. Whenever practical, ODS equipment is retrofitted to use non-ODS chemicals or is replaced. In addition to a safer environment, the upgraded or new equipment is also more energy efficient.
Unisys prides itself upon being a responsible corporate citizen in the communities where it operates. Unisys facilities and contractors who provide environmental related services are evaluated on a continuing basis to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Community Concern
- Unisys personnel help in community beautification events, lessen air pollution through car pooling, support a variety of Earth Day activities, participate in company-sponsored home electronics recycling and hazardous materials disposal and are members of various organizations whose focus is a safe and healthy environment.
- Unisys has implemented a program to identify and resolve environmental concerns resulting from activities associated with discontinued manufacturing operations. Remediation actions are jointly addressed in a coordinated effort involving the Unisys managerial team and regulatory agencies.

Designing for the Environment
A Design for the Environment Guideline has been established for use by Unisys product-development organizations. The guideline addresses the manufacture of parts, components, assemblies, and sub-assemblies from external sources to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory directives.
European Union Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS)
Unisys Corporation is committed to complying with all applicable governmental legislative and regulatory requirements, including the European Union Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and related Member State legislation implementing that Directive. The RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC) restricts the use of certain substances in electrical and electronic equipment including lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr+6) and flame retardants that are in the family of poly brominated biphenyls (PBBs) and poly brominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).
Unisys has designed, and will continue to design and market, electrical and electronic equipment for the European Union marketplace that is assembled using components meeting the requirements of the RoHS Directive. All RoHS-compliant equipment will be marked with an RoHS label to clearly identify it as compliant. Unisys is also working closely with its suppliers to ensure that each and every part provided by those suppliers is compliant with the RoHS Directive.
Electrical and electronic equipment put on the market by Unisys within the European Union on or after July 1, 2006, is compliant with the RoHS Directive and related Member State legislation.
In our commitment to a cleaner environment, we’re involved in a variety of product focused initiatives that help us, our customers and the planet.
REACH Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals
As a supplier of electronic products to the European Union (EU) market, Unisys Corporation (Unisys) supports the objectives of REACH as part of Unisys longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship.
Unisys is implementing a comprehensive plan to comply with the REACH regulations to ensure a smooth transition to compliance. Unisys is committed to update this information when any applicable changes occur or if relevant new substances are added to the REACH Regulation list. If you have any specific questions or concerns about Unisys REACH Regulation status, please contact your Unisys account manager.
Product Registration/Notification
Much of what Unisys produces for placement on the market of the EU are articles that may contain substances addressed by the REACH Directive rather than placement on the market of substances in preparations or substances on their own.
Unisys has determined that its products (“articles”) do not contain REACH Regulation substances in concentrations greater than 1 metric ton per year and those products (“articles”) do not release such substances under any normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use. As a consequence, these articles are not required to be registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
As required by Article 33 of the REACH Regulation, “Duty to communicate information on substances in articles,” Unisys shall inform its customers in the EU when Unisys products (articles) supplied to them contain any REACH-listed Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), chemicals in a concentration greater than 0.1% by weight. In response to that requirement Unisys declares the following information:
Certain cables, power cords and power supplies may contain:
Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) (CAS No 85-68-7, EC No 201-622-7)
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) (CAS No 84-74-2, EC No 201-557-4)
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) (CAS No 117-81-7, EC No 204-211-0)
Supply Chain Information
Unisys is a “downstream user” of chemicals as defined in the REACH Regulation and as such is obligated to i) make certain that the presence of substances in its articles are covered by safety data sheets received from suppliers and ii) follow instructions provided in such safety data sheets relative to substance use and handling or in any exposure scenarios.

On a regular basis regulatory compliance validation reviews are performed at Unisys locations to evaluate conformity with country specific environmental, safety and health (ESH) regulations and established Unisys best business practices. Third party assessments are performed independent of internal reviews to add objectivity to the evaluation process.
Management of Injuries and Illnesses
The lost workday rate is the measure of lost and restricted time cases per 100 employees. Because a common base and a specific period of time are involved, these rates are useful in determining both problem areas and progress in preventing work related injuries and illnesses.
The Unisys lost and restricted workday rate has decreased by approximately 30 percent over the past five years. In 2008 the lost and restricted rate for Unisys was 0.25 cases per 100 workers, the lowest rate Unisys has ever reported. That rate is approximately 35% lower than the average for all the industry classes that apply to Unisys. Unisys Safety and Health professionals manage injury and illness data to ensure that work activities that impact an employee’s well being present a minimal amount of risk.
In our commitment to a cleaner environment, we’re involved in a variety of product-focused initiatives that help us, our customers and the planet.

Product Reuse and Recycling Programs
Since 1997, over 31 million pounds of obsolete products collected internally and from customers in the U. S. were processed through our product parts recovery facility and third-party facilities. Many parts were refurbished for future reuse as replacement parts, while the remaining materials were delivered to end of life electronic equipment recyclers.
Unisys participates in a variety of community outreach programs that involve donations of excess office supplies and equipment, office furniture, and electronic media to schools, non-profit organizations and small businesses. Over the years many tons of previously used equipment has been diverted from landfills as the result of such outreach programs. In addition, Unisys actively participates in the recycling of aluminum cans, glass bottles, paper, cardboard, and packaging materials.
Whenever possible, Unisys promotes recycling opportunities, reduces waste generation and encourages the wise use of supplies and materials during and after their useful life. In our commitment to a cleaner environment, we're involved in a variety of product-focused initiatives that help us, our customers, and the planet.
Printer Cartridge Recycle Program
Unisys encourages employees and customers to recycle printer cartridges; significantly reducing a landfill waste stream. The recycling program has been expanded to include employee home generated print cartridges as well.
Environmentally Safe Packaging
We use environmentally safe packing materials and shipping cartons such as corrugated pads and recyclable cellulose wadding for distribution of products.
WEEE-Compliant Instructions for Hardware Disassembly
The hardware dismantling and selective treatment documentation provided below is intended for use by end-of-life recyclers and treatment facilities. Unisys provides this information in accordance with Articles 6 &11 of the European Union's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2002/96 (EC). If the hardware system you are dismantling is not identified, it is not subject to the Article 11 requirements and disassembly documentation is not available at this time.
General Instructions
Step 1: Identify the system hardware type.
Step 2: Download/print the disassembly instruction.
Step 3: Follow instructions while taking all necessary safety protocols.
Unisys has continuously strived to reduce the amount of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes generated from our various operations. From 1996 to 2005 Unisys has reduced RCRA hazardous waste generation by approximately 95%. Waste volume rose slightly in 2006 and 2008 due to facility consolidations and closures attributing to disposal of additional lab packs, used paint, and UPS batteries. From 2007 to 2008 hazardous waste generation rose slightly because of facility closure and consolidation activities.
To ensure that vendors who process Unisys hazardous waste operate within defined regulatory guidelines and the operational history of Transfer, Storage and Disposal Facilities does not pose a liability risk to the corporation, Unisys conducts on-going audits utilizing Unisys ESH professionals and third-party consultants.
Solid Waste Recycling
In addition to the recycling of materials such as paper, plastic, cardboard, electronic media, packaging materials, printer cartridges, and aluminum, many Unisys facilities recycle fluorescent lamps and consumer-sized batteries. Truckloads of used office furniture and office supplies are also donated to non-profit and charitable organizations each year. Employees are provided with the option of bringing batteries in from home use for consolidation with facility-generated battery waste streams.
The standard for nearly all Unisys facilities is to use recycled products and materials when possible.
Energy Conservation
Starting in 1981, Unisys implemented an energy management program to reduce energy consumption throughout the company.
- Unisys continues to evaluate methods that can be employed to reduce energy consumption through the use of more efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
- Unisys actively promotes, encourages, and supports home-based offices for its employees. In 2008, Unisys employees saved more than 800,000 gallons of gasoline that would have otherwise been used in commuting.
Green Lights Partner
Since 1988 Unisys has participated in the Environmental Protection Agencies Green Lights program. This program encourages the use of energy-saving lighting fixtures, light motion sensors as well as other sophisticated energy management systems.
How does Unisys view environmental management? It means conducting business in a responsible manner, with respect and concern for the environment. It’s a matter of strictly adhering to local, national, and international laws governing environmental protection and offering environmentally-responsible products.
To foster this commitment, Unisys has assembled a staff of qualified professionals possessing extensive experience. These skilled professionals are responsible for identifying and resolving environmental, safety, and health issues in a timely, cost-effective and technically-sound manner.
Environmental management entails:
- Working with our customers to develop environmentally acceptable products and services.
- Sustaining effective product recycling and reclamation programs.
- Enlisting the support of our suppliers with regard to sound environmental management.
- Using resources in an environmentally responsible manner.
- Addressing environmental response activities consistent with government requirements.
- Striving for continual improvement in our environmental performance.
- Conducting business in a manner that safeguards the interests of Unisys stakeholders.
- Fostering environmental responsibility among our employees.
- Reducing or eliminating the use of hazardous substances whenever technically feasible.
While environmental management is a continuous process, Unisys has made notable advances over the past several years.
Unisys manufacturing sites Plymouth, Michigan, and Mission Viejo, California, received ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) certification. Through on-going EMS implementation, the company continues to formulate and implement policy and objectives that take into account legislative requirements, environment-friendly technological approaches and information about significant environmental impacts.
Unisys EMS is a managerial commitment to environmental wellness and sustainability. The EMS program applies to those environmental matters that Unisys can control and over those that it can be expected to have influence.
Unisys has established and maintains an EMS that:
- Establishes a corporate-wide environmental policy.
- Identifies any environmental aspects arising from Unisys past, existing or planned activities, products or services to determine any environmental impacts of significance.
- Identifies relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Identifies priorities and sets appropriate environmental objectives and targets.
- Establishes administrative controls to implement the policy and achieve objectives and targets.
- Facilitates planning, control, monitoring, corrective action, auditing and review activities to ensure compliance with policy, laws and regulations and maintain the relevancy of EMS.
- Ensures system flexibility capable of adapting to changing circumstances.
All sites that are registered to the ISO 14001 standard are audited on an annual basis by ISO auditors to verify conformance to the Environmental Management Systems program certification.
